outreach at kibworthOur Outreach team takes archaeology workshops and talks out to schools and colleges in the county. It also runs Masterclasses and workshops on campus and in the department. We've also worked with the army on Project Nightingale at Caerwent. Find out more on what we do! And hear about the places we have visited last year, read some testimonials, and see what we can bring to your school to help bring the past alive!

Research Projects

Niah cavesHuw Barton is currently investigating the subsistence practices of extant and prehistoric hunters and gatherers in tropical rainforest through the analysis of use-wear and organic residues on stone and organic artefacts. A particular focus is the analysis of starch granules preserved as tool residues and within sediments as a direct indicator of the use of roots, tubers, rhizomes, and palm sago.

Research projects include analysis of lithics from the Niah Caves in Sarawak (The Great Cave of Niah), Ille Cave on the island of Palawan in the Philippines, and various sites in Melanesia including Papua New Guinea. Recent collaborators include Dr Robin Torrence, Australian Museum; Dr Victor Paz, University of the Philippines; Dr Tim Denham, Monash University; and Dr Chris Pavlides, La Trobe University. Huw also maintains research interests in the techological analysis of stone tools, human behavioural ecology and desert archaeology.
