A2/AS Levels
BA American Studies
For American Studies no particular subjects are required, although English and/or History provide an excellent foundation.
BA English and American Studies
For English and American Studies an A Level in English (ie English literature or English Language or English Literature and Language) is required.
BA History and American Studies
For History and American Studies we prefer History at A Level but this is not a prerequisite.
Number of A-Levels
Successful applicants usually have three A Levels, but candidates with two A levels will be considered, as will those with alternative qualifications; two AS levels are accepted in place of a third A level,
General Studies
General Studies is accepted as one of the three A Levels.
Key Skills
Key Skills are welcomed in addition and may be included in any offer.
Overseas Qualifications
We welcome students from overseas and will consider applications from students offering international qualifications such as the International or European Baccalaureate.
Mature Students
We welcome applications from mature students and those who do not have A Levels can submit details of alternative qualifications.
Selection Procedure
Candidates are selected on the basis of the information on the UCAS form and are not normally interviewed. Those to whom we make an offer are invited to visit the University for a day to meet the staff and students and see the facilities available. Offer-holders should follow the link below to book a place on one of the American Studies Visit Days in 2013:
