Materials and nano-materials science in the College focuses on a range of blue skies and applications driven research and enterprise activities bringing together expertise from diverse backgrounds in Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Researchers work together on shared challenges in materials testing, characterization, recycling/recovery, modeling and developing new manufacturing technologies.

Contact: the theme leader for materials and nano-materials is Dr Karl Ryder.

Key research areas within the theme include:

  • Chemistry of materials and interfaces, surface coatings
  • Materials and metallurgy for aerospace
  • Materials at the nano-scale, clusters and magnets
  • Space research and advanced manufacturing
  • Sustainable new materials and recycling technology

eturbofanThe materials and nano-materials theme provides strategic focus for research groups across the College building on existing strengths and establishing a framework in which to work together on questions in fundamental science research and development.
