PhD Research Studentships

Applications are invited for funded studentships to support full-time PhD research study within departments of the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences & Psychology.
Listed below are all studentships that are currently available, commencing October 2013 or before.
Further studentships will be added as they become available.

 

Application process

Applications for all studentships can be submitted online, following the instructions at http://www2.le.ac.uk/study/research/how-to-apply/apply/online

 

Separate applications must be submitted for different studentships, and each must clearly indicate which studentship is the subject of the application and specify the Studentship Number (if assigned), Project Title, Supervisor and host Department.
In all applications you must complete the section about Financial Support. If you are applying for one of the funded studentships described below (eg, MIBTP, MRC, etc) enter those details.
In addition to copies of academic certificates and course transcripts, each application must be accompanied by
(i) a Personal Statement (http://www2.le.ac.uk/study/research/how-to-apply/personal-statement) explaining your reasons for applying for the particular project/studentship
(ii) a detailed Curriculum Vitae
(iii) contact details (email) of two people from whom we can  request confidential comment on your academic ability.

 

Academic requirements:  all applicants must hold, or expect to obtain, a 1st or 2.i Honours degree in a relevant subject from a UK University, or the equivalent.  Applicants whose first language is not English must have achieved an IELTS score of 6.5 minimum, or equivalent, or hold a degree wholly taught in English.

The Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP) is a BBSRC-funded doctoral training partnership between the Universities of Warwick, Birmingham and Leicester. It delivers innovative, world-class research training across the Life Sciences to boost the growing UK Bioeconomy in the areas of:

Training:
All students recruited to the MIBTP will join the training programme which operates during year one. Students undertake an initial10 weeks of training in the methods of modern integrative bioscience, followed by two 12-week mini-research projects, and one 12-week professional placement. Our PhD training aims to produce mature, research-skilled graduates primed to succeed in their careers.

 

Eligibility:
BBSRC awards (15)
are ONLY available to applicants eligible to pay the UK/EU Tuition fee and who satisfy UK residency requirements; i.e. UK nationals, EU nationals who have been resident in the UK for three years immediately before the award, or other nationals who have been granted “permanent leave to remain” status in the UK.  EU nationals who are not resident in the UK are eligible for a Fees-only award (i.e. no stipend).
University awards (15) are available to UK and EU nationals who are eligible to pay the UK/EU Tuition fee, even if they are not resident in the UK at the time of application.
Applicants whose first language is not English must have achieved an IELTS score of 6.5 minimum, or equivalent, or hold a degree wholly taught in English.
Nationals of other countries who do not have permanent UK residency status are NOT eligible

Students from a wide diversity of academic backgrounds are invited to apply; MIBTP welcomes those with creative drive in both theoretical (maths, engineering, physics or computer science) and experimental (biology, biomedicine, chemistry, or biotechnology) research.  You are encouraged to indicate a preference for particular universities and projects at the time of application so that we ensure recruitment into all topic areas, but final project choice is not essential at this time. PhD projects need not be finalized until training is completed and you have had the chance to experience different research environments.

MRC PhD Research Studentships in Cancer, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Disease Science

Four PhD studentships, provided by a Doctoral Training Grant from the Medical Research Council, are available to support the projects listed below which will address the molecular causes of disease with the aim of identifying new therapeutic targets for subsequent pre-clinical and clinical development. Students will receive training in translational research and the application of fundamental research to clinical problems.
The studentships are tenable for three years six months, in the first instance, and will pay full-time University UK/EU Tuition fees and a tax-free stipend to the student starting at £13,726pa; there is also a £5000 pa research support grant which includes a £300pa Conference/Travel Allowance for the student.

MRC Industrial CASE PhD Studentship

One four year Industrial CASE PhD studentship is available in the Department of Biochemistry for a research project in collaboration with MRC Technology, Centre for Therapeutics Discovery at Mill Hill, London.
The student will receive the standard MRC PhD Stipend (£13,726pa during 2012/13) with a £2,500pa supplement from the collaborating institution. During tenure of the award the student will be expected to spend time working at the MRC-T Centre, for which an additional £6,500 supplement is available to offset accommodation and travel costs.
