Cardiovascular Research at the University of Leicester

Introduction

The cardiovascular theme encompasses all research in the College that is related to the cardiovascular system. There are over 30 principal investigators affiliated with the cardiovascular theme. Principal investigators are based in several College Departments including Cardiovascular Sciences, Health Sciences, Cell Physiology and Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Infection, Inflammation and Immunity.

Principle sub-themes include cardiovascular genetics,  cardiovascular cell biology and signalling, cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology and population research and clinical trials.

There are multi-disciplinary research programmes on several common cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, heart failure, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, arrhythmias, stroke, and diabetes. There is excellent interaction between basic and clinical scientists. There is an emphasis on translational research facilitated by the Leicester NIHR Biomedical Research Unit in Cardiovascular Disease and the Leicester Clinical Trials Unit. The theme is also home to the Trent Research Network in Stroke and the South East Midlands Diabetes Research Network.

Collaborations are facilitated within the theme through regular research days, a regular seminar programme, establishment of groups focused on specific sub-themes, a theme intra-net and cross Departmental studentships. There are strong interactions with investigators in other Departments including Engineering, Physics and Chemistry as well as with national and international groups.

Work has started on the new Cardiovascular Research Centre at Glenfield Hospital.
