The event will be opened at 10.00 in a marquee in our grounds where a choir from St John the Baptist school, with some members of staff from the MRC will sing a song composed by the Royal Composer, Andrew Gant, called ‘What will you do to change the world?”.

Activities include: Ballet The MRC has collaborated with students of the prestigious Northern Ballet School in Manchester as part of its Outreach programme. Students have been learning how cells move, how they are created and live and die, and the concepts underlying the development of cancer and its treatment. They have translated their learning into a performance following a single life, from its origins through to adulthood. Tickets are now available for booking. There are 40 tickets available for each performance at: 11.00, 12.00 and 13.00 E-mail dc259@le.ac.uk to request tickets indicating how many tickets you would like and which show you would prefer to see. Where demand is high ticket allocation will be by draw. Confirmation e-mail will be sent the week before the performance indicating if you have been allocated tickets.

Lab activities

CSI-MRC: Solve a murder that has happened in a laboratory with DNA fingerprinting. Learning and memory games: How learning and memory tests are used in relation to neurological disorders.

Electron microscopy: Exploring a variety of samples with an electron microscope, showing objects at a high magnification and in finer detail.

The death of a cell: See how cells die. What do they look like and how can we control it?

DNA Bracelets: Choose from a selection of animals and make a bracelet of their genetic code to wear.

Mesothelioma: Examine cells from this disease and hear how scientists are trying to discover treatments and cures.

Cell division: Looking through a microscope at cells to see if you can spot all the stages of cell division. P53 and

Cancer: Showcasing current research into a major suppressor of cancer.

Why your heart beats faster when you are in love: Heart beat and blood pressure will be measured to explain how chemicals can affect your body.

DNA Extraction: Extract DNA directly from Bananas.

FACS: How do you sort cells if you have a mixture of them? A practical demonstration of a technique regularly used.

Talks

Dispelling the Vampire myth.
Starts 10.30. Discussing the interaction of drugs and chemicals in some genetic illnesses and disorders (Suitable for younger audience)

Malaria: An ancient killer, a modern cure? Starts 12.15. A presentation on malaria, it’s history, the devastating effect of this disease and if modern science can help cure it. (Suitable for 15 year olds and over).

Decoding cancer.
Starts 14.00. Examining cancer and the possible use of new technologies to bring new breakthroughs in the search for a cure. (Suitable for 15 year olds and over).

Ask the Scientist
A chance to pose questions to scientists at different stages of their careers, whether the questions are about research, careers or general science. The day will appeal to all ages.

The Frank and Katherine May Lecture Theatre, Henry Wellcome Building - 24 June, 5.30pm - 6.30pm

The Frank May Prize Lecture 2013 will be given by Professor Ruth Luthi-Carter, Chair of Neurobiology of Behaviour in the Department of Cell Physiology and Pharmacology, on Monday 24 June 2013.

Summarising her lecture, she said: "The nervous system is the central detector and commander of operations in multicellular organisms. In order to fulfil its crucial responsibilities, the human brain orchestrates a complex program of expression of individual gene sequences. I engage in the systematic study of these elaborate gene-based mosaics to elucidate how the brain operates at the molecular level. An ultimate mission and central focus of my work is to clarify what happens in the brain during neurodegenerative illnesses. It is not always easy to identify or straightforward to interpret the kaleidoscope of events that occur during such a dramatic and overpowering process. Thus, my research team and I have reflected carefully on the consensus findings in our results and developed innovative strategies for their evaluation. The disease-affected brain does not always behave as we expect but often instructs us about the nervous system’s unique and fascinating molecular features. We attend diligently to these lessons with the goals of demystifying the intricacies of this amazing system and applying new knowledge toward the remedy of human neurological conditions.

"In addition to scientific insights, the challenges borne in pursuit of this research have provided numerous opportunities for professional and personal development. I will highlight a few of these experiences to illustrate the important roles of creativity, collaboration and perseverance in achieving unique and worthwhile research aspirations."
