Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Humanities
The PG Cert in Medical Humanities is an interdisiplinary two-year part-time postgraduate evening course at the University of Leicester, examining the relationship between the Arts and Medical Practice. The course is worth 60 credits at Masters level, and can therefore contribute towards a Masters (180 credits) in Medical Humanities. It is tailored to meet the CPD needs of General Practitioners, is open to all current and retired GPs, and is supported by the local Faculty of the RCGP.
Course Structure
Part-time (two years)
Year 1
Patients and Practitioners I: The Medical Encounter during the Renaissance; Patients and Practitioners II: The Medical Encounter from the Enlightenment to the Present Day.
The first year of the PG Cert is an historical survey course exploring the patient-practitioner relationship, through a variety of multidisciplinary sources, encouraging participants to reflect critically upon their own experiences in the light of historical interactions.
Assessment: two 2,500-word essays.
Year 2
Mind and Matter: Representing Health and Illness in the Arts and Humanities.
Issues normally covered include: illness and suffering; health and wellbeing; addiction and creativity; trauma; madness; disabilities; contagion and infection; recovery and cure; death and spectacle; the (health and unhealthy) doctor as writer (for example, Keats, Conan Doyle, Chekhov). The second year of the PG Cert will investigate how health and illness are represented by the arts and humanities. Drawing on expertise from different Departments and Schools, this module will offer a wide-ranging exploration of both the healthy and diseased mind and body as represented in art, literature, film and television, as well as assessing the impact of medicine on creative and narrative forms.
Assessment: 2,500-word essay + reflective blog on relevance to clinical practice.
