Pathways and Special Options
A number of themed pathways are available within the MA Humanities, which can be taken as a more directed course of study along a recognised academic theme. The degree awarded reflects this with a name specific to the chosen pathway.
To study for a pathway, sudents must take a minimum of 90 credits in a specialist subject area. This would normally be at least one 30-credit optional module and a 60-credit dissertation in a related topic. Brief descriptions of the available pathways follow, with links to further information where available.

MA in Medical Humanities
A special pathway designed specifically for intercalating or part-time study by undergraduates in Medicine, which studies the relationship of the Arts to Medical Practice.
MA in American Studies and Humanities
The Centre for American Studies gathers together researchers from a number of discliplines to consider social, political and cultural aspects of modern and historical American life. The MA in American Studies takes full advantage of this multidisciplinary subject to provide a solid grounding for postgraduate study which can take in any specialism in American Studies which you choose to follow.
MA in Archaeology and Humanities
Combine a study of the humanities with specialisation in the theory and/or practice of Archaeology. Take advantage of top-rated teaching and research from the School of Archaeology and Ancient History.
MA in English and Humanities
By choosing an area of specialism within English, students can combine English-related optional modules and a dissertation with optional modules from related subjects and core courses in Humanities Principles and Research, and gain a named MA in English and the Humanities.
MA in Film Studies and Humanities
The MA in Film Studies and Humanities combines detailed subject-based teaching within the department of History of Art and Film, with the opportunity for inter-disciplinary study across the College of Arts, Humanities and Law. Students will specialise in Film modules (available from both History of Art and Film and Modern Languages) and a dissertation, and choose from a range of options in other departments to complement themes of interdisciplinary study.
MA in History and Humanities
Useful for students wanting to combine teaching and research in History with related disciplines (such as Archaeology, Literature, Architecture, Social or Urban planning etc.).
MA in History of Art and Humanities
The MA in History of Art and Humanities combines detailed subject-based teaching within the department of History of Art and Film, with the opportunity for inter-disciplinary study across the College of Arts, Humanities and Law. Students will specialise in History of Art modules and a dissertation, and choose from a range of options in other departments to complement themes of interdisciplinary study.
MA in Holocaust Studies and Humanities
The Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust Studies was founded in 1990, and refounded under its present name in 1993 under the auspices of the Burton Trusts. It is a non-profit teaching and research centre within the School of Historical Studies at the University of Leicester.
MA in Medieval Studies and Humanities
The Medieval Research Centre offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary research in Archaeology, English and Continental languages and literatures, Ecclesiastical, Political, Social and Economic History and the History of Art. The MA in Medieval Studies and Humanities takes full advantage of these strengths within the College, and provides the base for study and a dissertation tailored to your medieval interests.
MA in Modern Languages and Humanities
This is a multi-disciplinary degree with students studying a majority of modules (including a dissertation) within the School of Modern Languages, but able to choose optional modules from a range of associated disciplines. The School has specialisms in French, Italian, Spanish (including Latin America) and German language and culture.
MA in Regional Studies and Humanities
Taking advantage of internationally-reknown teaching and research from the Centre for English Local History, this pathway allows students to explore the ideas of 'region' from perspectives of landscape, history, cultural artefacts and more. Drawing also from the disciplines of English, History of Art and Archaeology, students can create a uniquely tailored MA to follow particular areas of interest or research.
MA in Urban Studies and Humanities
The Centre for Urban History conducts cutting edge teaching and research in urban history and related fields; this pathway provides the facility to combine this study with related disciplines to give new perspectives on urbanisation and urban life.
MA in Women's Studies and Humanities
One of the four major themes within the core Issues in the Humanities module focusses on Gender. This pathway allows students to expand this study into wider interdisciplinary research, supported by the numerous specialists across all disciplines within the College.
