Internationalisation
The College welcomes EU and rest of the world applicants for its many programmes and, in a two-way understanding of the importance of internationalisation, encourages UK students to take advantage of the study abroad opportunities in many of the departments. To study at the University of Leicester is to be part of an international community.
Students who are determined and open-minded enough to study abroad, whether in Leicester as 'international students' or as UK students, for example in the EU on Erasmus schemes or in the United States on exchanges, all obtain real advantages in the job-market. More important still, the curriculum and study abroad opportunities help students to become international citizens with the kind of perspective that a global environment and its mix of cultures as well as a global market urgently needs.
Departments and centres have many links and formal partnerships across the world, and these inform and enrich teaching and research programmes in American Studies, Archaeology and Ancient History, English, Historical Studies, History of Art and Film, and Museum Studies. The School of Modern Languages has a particular role to play in opening up European and languages and cultures, both through its own 'year abroad' degree programmes and its extensive 'Languages at Leicester' programme, which brings a wider range of languages to University students, staff and members of the public. The School of Law offers an LLB (European Union) with its many partners and an LLB (International) with study abroad partners in Australia, Canada, Singapore and South Africa.
The University understands that International students need extra support, from the Welcome Week through to dedicated Careers advice. The International Office, the Student Support and Development Office and the Students’ Union are important sources of advice and assistance.
We also understand that some international students cannot spend all of their periods of study at Leicester, and the extensive Distance Learning programmes in this and other Colleges can give extra flexibility.
