Matched funding

There has never been a better time to support the University of Leicester

Photograph of students walking across campusOn 1 August 2008 the Government launched a £200 million Matched Funding Scheme to match all eligible gifts raised by English universities until 31 July 2011; any Gift Aid reclaimed on the original donation can also be matched.

For Leicester, gifts will be matched on a 3:1 ratio – for every £3 received the government will give an additional £1, up to a cap of £2.75 million.

Taking a gift of £100 as an example:

  • for a non-taxpayer this gift would be worth £133 to the University
  • for a standard rate taxpayer the value of the gift could rise to £170 (following Gift Aid and match funding)
  • for a higher rate taxpayer, the value of the gift could rise to £170 at a cost to the donor of only £75 (following income tax relief).

Current Priorities:

The following forms of giving are eligible:

  • gifts of cash
  • gifts of shares, with their cash value fixed on the value of the share at the date of donation
  • gifts from small/medium-sized charitable trusts and foundations (those with incomes of less than £60 million per annum)
  • corporate gifts, where it fits within the above categories
  • overseas gifts, where it fits within the above categories

Legacies and gifts in kind are not eligible for matching. If you would like to discuss whether your gift is eligible, please call Jon Angell on 0116 2522931. Thank you.
