Cardiovascular Research Centre Appeal

The University of Leicester British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Research Centre is now complete and operational. A big thank you to our donors. Please view the film below to see the difference your tremendous support has made.

In May 2010 the University of Leicester set about creating a purpose-built £12.6 million Cardiovascular Research Centre (CRC), constructing high quality laboratory and academic research space and providing the latest specialist equipment.

The CRC has been made possible by the generosity and support of hundreds of individuals, Groups, Associations, Schools, Companies and Trusts, such as the tremendous gift of £500,000 from leading local donor The David Wilson Foundation. National organisations have also recognised the international excellence of the University’s research teams, including notably The British Heart Foundation and The Wolfson Foundation.

Significant support for the Appeal from Leicestershire and Rutland, including The Edith Murphy Foundation, local community groups, businesses and charities has been particularly heartening. The Leicester Mercury helped raise public awareness and people from all communities responded magnificently by helping to raise more than £5 million.

The CRC is now complete and operational and adjoins the existing Clinical Sciences wing, which houses the University’s existing medical research and teaching facilities. The 2,200m² eye catching facility has more than doubled the amount of research space and is also in close proximity to the cardiac wards. The cross- disciplinary research undertaken in the new Centre will enable investigators and clinicians to tackle vanguard challenges and speed up the translation of new research knowledge and discoveries into improved risk reduction, clinical practice and patient care.

The CRC Appeal also led to an unprecedented £7 million gift from The John and Lucille van Geest Foundation which has enabled the University to build a new Biomarker Facility adjacent to the new CRC. For further information on the University's largest philanthropic donation ever click here.
