"The Life of Slang" Mini-Lecture, 2.00pm-2.45pm
"Slang is, like, well epic, innit?" Contemporary slang is associated with youth culture, which has long been dominated by (African-)American musical forms. But where did slang come from before the Second World War, and is there still such a thing as British slang?

This lecture will be presented by Professor Julie Coleman from the School of English.
Professor Coleman's research interests lie in the history of the English language, particularly the history of the lexis and the slang and cant dictionary tradition.
Professor Coleman's four monographs on the cant and slang dictionary tradition cover the sixteenth to the twentieth century and her The Life of Slang will be published in 2012.
