Santander Scholarship Presentation 2011

The University of Leicester and Santander held a special event on 8th June 2011 to celebrate the award of the first Santander scholarships to postgraduate students.

Certificates were presented to 8 students from the various departments participating in the Scholarship Programme, including Media and Communications, Museum Studies, Biochemistry, Economics and Computer Science.

Background

In October 2010, the University of Leicester signed a Scholarship Donation and Co-operation agreement with Santander UK which provided support funding for seven postgraduate students from South America, Spain and Portugal studying Masters programmes and also fund Travel Awards for students and staff.  The programme has now expanded to include funding for 16 Postgraduate scholarships in 2011-12, and support for our Summer Schools as part of the University’s successful programme of widening participation.

Presentations

The evening included welcoming speeches from Professor Douglas Tallack, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International); Steve O’Connor, Director of Development and Dominic Tomlin, Santander campus Branch Manager.

The highlight of the evening were presentations from three of the student recipients, who shared the difference these scholarships had made to them:

Santander has given me more than a substantial scholarship. It has given me the experience to improve my skills, to fulfil my dreams, and to overcome my fears.”
Michael Andrés Forero Parra, MA Art Museum and Gallery Studies
I would like to thank Santander Bank and their initiative to support Latin students on having, not only a postgraduate education, but the experience of their lives. May this agreement last for long so that future prospect students can get benefited with the same opportunities we enjoyed this year.”
David Martínez Flores, MA Mass Communications
It has to be important for companies and institutions to promote education and support it like Santander does with its program, helping us to achieve goals and fulfil dreams; also this vision can help to create networks of knowledge and support among students and institutions.”
Andrea Hurtado de Mendoza Rosales, Global Environmental Change
