Homecoming 2010

Over 500 graduates, guests and staff attended this year’s Homecoming event at the University of Leicester on June 26.  With a back drop of beautiful blue skies adults and children could enjoy a fun-filled and educational day out back on campus. Even more alumni brought their families to enjoy the children’s rides, face painter, rocket making and magic show.

The Keynote lecture was given by Dr Jeff Hoffman, a real-life astronaut with over 1000 hours of flying time. Dr Hoffman’s gave his engaging lecture on the “Hubble Telescope and the Future of Human Space Flight” and was received with rapturous applause.

New to this year’s Homecoming was a Lost Alumni Breakfast where graduates from the 1970s could catch up with fellow alumni who had not been in touch with the University since they had graduated over 30 years ago. Over croissants and coffee, graduates could catch up and reminisce about their time as a student and marvel at how much the campus had changed.

Guests were then free to choose from a range of mini lectures and demonstrations which included tours of  the Space Research Centre and the Library; hands on demonstrations in the Space School and Engineering; and workshops at Embrace Arts and Museum Studies.

After lunch as the day got hotter, there was a chance to relax in the Registration Marquee whilst enjoying the free ice cream created by the Cool Chemists.

Donors to the Annual Fund enjoyed a special preview of the nearly completed refurbishment of the Percy Gee Building and were given the opportunity to meet and hear from some of our current students who have benefitted from bursaries supported by our alumni. The day concluded with the Vice Chancellor’s Review and a chance for guests to try out the new Student Union bar, The Scholar.
