GENIE-us best practise
How innovating genetics education benefits all of our students
Just one way in which the University of Leicester’s leading research impacts the teaching experience is through the work of GENIE, which is a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). GENIE builds upon the inspiring and internationally recognised work of the Department of Genetics to provide a challenging and worthwhile learning experience for our students.
In a dynamic state-of-the-art teaching environment, students are encouraged to develop their skills and knowledge through project work, problem-based group exercises and outreach activities in schools, which are key to GENIE’s approach. This supportive experience ensures our students are well-rounded and develop not only their academic, but also their interpersonal and group-working skills.
The benefits of GENIE’s approach to teaching are not limited to genetics students. The impact across the University is wide ranging, through the use of approaches to develop generic key skills in other sciences and social sciences. Sharing of best teaching practice enables effective work to be passed throughout the University, leading to skills development across all subject areas.
Best practice from GENIE is also being shared and implemented across genetics education with not only the dissemination of resources produced by GENIE, but also the co-ordination and sharing of innovation and excellence being developed nationally.
The Department of Genetics' revolutionary research and dynamic teaching is now benefitting students across the University of Leicester and further afield.
