Going further with distance learning

How our distance learning education reaches out globally but never compromises on the supportive, personal touch

Saint Helena, located in the Mid Atlantic, is an island that is only accessible by sea with a mail ship that takes 14 days to travel from the UK. Despite this, Garron Yon, who studied by distance learning for his master’s degree in Mass Communications with the University of Leicester, received his learning materials on time and enjoyed full access to his own tutor and journal articles online.

We are one of Britain’s largest providers of distance learning. But despite our scale we’re able to deliver a bespoke and personalised service that values the different backgrounds and experiences of our diverse student body. Studying by distance learning requires commitment and courage. At Leicester we’re working with our students to ensure this investment pays off. And the high quality materials developed for distance learning are now utilised by departments to enrich campus-based teaching.

Meanwhile Garron has been very impressed with studying in this way: “Following the course, I was promoted so I now provide PR support at a strategic level. I regularly provide advice to the St Helena Government on media issues and at present I am assisting with public consultation on whether air access should be introduced to St Helena.”
