Brief Biography

I studied Physics at the University of Leicester, completed a PGCE at Leicester's School of Education and, after teaching physics and control technology for a couple of years at Countesthorpe Community College, I returned to the Physics Department to undertake a PhD in "A Comparative Analysis of Electron Correlation in Atomic Beryllium and a Momentum Space Investigation of Lithium Hydride" within the Quantum Molecular Physics Group. I then joined the University's Department of Engineering, as a research associate, working on safety studies associated with the running of fast breeder and pressurized water nuclear reactors. This work was in association with the Nuclear Industry Inspectorate (NII now part of the DTI).

My PhD and post-doc work involved extensive use of computers, numerical analysis and graphics packages - so a career in computing was inevitable.

I joined the Computer Centre  in July 1981 as Information and Education Officer teaching, mainly, FORTRAN programming and how to create, edit and manage files on our CDC Cyber 72 and producing user documentation. Time moved on, and after a short spell as Head of Information Service and Head of Learning Technology I am now the Manger of team that runs Web & eLearning Services. I have been involved with several externally funded initiatives namely: TLTSN, TLTP Phase 3 TALENT Project and the JISC/JTAP funded CASTLE Project.

Learning is achieved when the learner is actively engaged in the creation of knowledge rather than the passive recipient of information

Knowledge = information + organisation
Information = data + meaning
Learning = retention of knowledge
Teaching = imparting of knowledge and associated retention skills
The important thing, is to keep an open mind - prepare to be amazed!
