Background

Qualified in medicine in 1975 (Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London); principal in general practice, Gloucestershire, 1978-1992; research fellow, General Practice Unit, Department of Epidemiology and General Practice, University of Bristol, 1988-1992. Appointed to Leicester 1992. Non-principal in general practice in Leicester, 1992-date. Promoted to a Chair in 1999; appointed Head of Department of Health Sciences 2003.

Research interests centre on quality and safety of health care, generally but not exclusively focused on primary health care. Particular interests include methods to implement improvements in performance, patients' experiences of care, and methods to improve safety in primary health care.

In addition to undergraduate teaching, I teach in the Department's MSc in Primary Care Research and also lead a module on Quality and Safety of Care in our HSR/Social Science Applied to Health/Primary Care Research MSc programme. I supervise PhD and MD students in studies on quality, safety and service evaluation. Please contact me if you would like to discuss studying for a potential doctorate in these fields.
