Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (Answers)
I need/wish to submit my work after the deadline - how do I do this?

Students who need/wish to submit their work after the deadline fall into the following categories:

(1) Students submitting late with permission due to mitigating circumstances which have been approved by the University.

(2) Students submitting late without permission.

Category 1 students will be provided with notice of the period of extension for the assignment. Providing students submit without that period of extension there is no penalty.

Category 2 students will be penalised for late submission. Details of the penalties can be found in your handbook.

The online submission portals close on the deadline advertised. It is your responsibility to work to these deadlines. Students wishing/needing to submit late should send their work to the following email address (ulsmsubmiss@le.ac.uk) after the deadline has passed. Please make sure that you identify 'late submission' in the subject line of your email and provide the following information within the message of that email:

Your name

Your programme

The module you are submitting work to

Your student number.

Can I insert my own document file into the AGC Form rather than copy and paste?
It is technically possible to do this HOWEVER this usually results in the file being rejected by the markers. Please do not simply insert the file into the AGC Form - either develop the essay within the AGC Form or copy and paste your essay into the AGC Form. An example of what we expect is provided for you under Prog Info.

I can't see my work in Blackboard's Grade View

UPDATE: 28th JANUARY 2009: Regarding the issue of a student's successful Turnitin submission not being displayed in Gradebook. The University technical team have heard from Turnitin on the issue and Turnitin have advised that this type of glitch has happened previously and unfortunately there is no solution at present to fix this.

All the University can advise at the moment is that if a student has successfully submitted to Turnitin and their submission has not appeared in Gradebook, then they should a) check their University email box for the Turnitin submission receipt and retain this as evidence of submission and b) go and click on the assignment link in the course where they will be able to View their submission. If they don't have a receipt or cannot see their submission, then they should contact the University technical team (blackboard@le.ac.uk) regarding a problem with their submission.

I suspect that I have a computer virus, can I submit my work?

 Our advice would be for you to contact your IT Network Support people to inform them of the virus - they will be in a position to advise on whether you should/should not upload your work from an infected network. They should also be in a position to provide help in cleaning files to upload.

I am experiencing 'technical difficulties' with Blackboard. Can the School submit the work to Blackboard for me? No, you need to address your technical difficulties and submit the work yourself. Please inform the Blackboard manager the technical difficulties you are experiencing, please provide detailed information on the nature of difficulties they are experiencing, e.g. sending a screenshot to ease the task of troubleshooting.

I intended to submit for xyz deadline and signed up. I am now no longer able to submit for this deadline, what do I do?

You can remove yourself from the sign up sheet.

If I do not submit on time what happens next?

You are permitted to submit at the next deadline but you will need to sign up again to submit to that new deadline.

Can I have an extension?

Please see your programme handbook for details on extensions and the penalties for late submission.

If I submit early will I get my work back earlier?

No. The Tutors will receive the work a couple of days after the submission deadline. If you submit earlier than the deadline your work will be stored for the deadline, the work is then batch processed.

Why are the School allowing students to submit online?

From the research we have undertaken students would like the option to submit online. Online submission also provides the School with the opportunity for speeding up the process of submitting work allowing the University to receive the work far faster than via post.

What are the Deadlines for Submission?

Students are able to submit their assignments to a set deadline. The deadlines occur every 3 months and the deadline is always on the last day of the month.

The preview screen that I see before I submit shows the document I wish to submit but all the formatting has gone - why is this?

You may wish to read the instructions again. The preview screen is simply to check that this is the document you wish to submit. The preview displays in text format only. All graphics/diagrams/formatting etc will not be displayed. The document we receive to mark is the actual document you submit ... it is a basic file transfer.

Can I use online submission to submit a resubmission?

Yes - however you should wait for guidance from the University Progress Board. If the portal is closed to you for your resubmission, please contact ulsmsubmiss@le.ac.uk.

I am experiencing difficulties with the online submission - is there further help available?

JISC & Plagiarism Advice.org have provided advice for students on the browsers which are supported and the way in which they need to be configured to work effectively. You can find this information by clicking this link the following link also contains information on browser settings.

I did not receive/ I have lost my Turnitin receipt. Is it possible to get a new one?

A copy is automatically generated when you submit your script, a copy is also sent to your cfs email account. It is your responsibility to keep a copy of the Turnitin receipt number (the paper ID) for your records. Prior to the submission deadline you can obtain a copy of the receipt number by clicking online submission, selecting your module and clicking view/complete on the online submission portal. You should then click on your file under the 'Title'. Please do not contact the University to request a copy of your receipt number.

Is it possible to check that I submitted correctly?

Please see item above.

How do I receive my work back?

Work is returned by email or via the agency partner. Please check your email accounts and with your agency partner before contacting the University. We do not return grades via Blackboard. The School return the AGC Form only. Your script is kept on file.

I am redirected to Turnitin homepage when I try to submit.

We have posted on Blackboard login page a notice about a temporary problem with Turnitin and a suggested workaround. The Turnitin support team has advised us that there is a issue with users submitting/viewing a submission to Turnitin from within Blackboard whereby users are redirected to the Turnitin home page for login.

They believe that the problem may be linked to the use of Internet Explorer 7 (IE7). Changing the security settings for IE7 has resolved the issue for a number of users that they have been dealing with. However, this is a temporary solution as they haven't advised us of a permanent fix as yet.

As a temporary workaround, users that are experiencing the problem of being logged out and are using Internet Explorer 7, Turnitin advise that users should change their IE7 security settings to trust the Turnitin site, so that they can view/submit submissions without getting logged out of the system. To do this, users should:

1) Open up a Internet Explorer 7 browser;

2) Click on the 'Tools' option on the browser menu and then click on 'Internet

Options';

3) Click on the 'Security' tab, then click on the 'Trusted Sites' green tick icon and then click the 'Sites' button;

4) Add https://submit.ac.uk and tick the Tick box entitled 'Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone'. Close the Trusted Sites form and click 'OK' on the Internet Options form;

5) Close down all instances of IE7 for the changes to take effect.

A number of students have suggested that they would like to practice with Turnitin before they attempt a full submission. We have tried to accommodate this request by setting up this trial area.

Before you are able to use this trial area you will need to enroll. You can do this by clicking here. The access code is ULSM123 please note the capitalisation.
