What is electronic voting?
What an electronic voting system is and what it does
Electronic voting
Electronic voting is a way for students to register a response to a question posed by a lecturer. Each student has a wireless handset which transmits a signal to a receiver that is plugged into a computer. Software is provided which integrates with powerpoint to enable the creation of question slides for use in presentations.
Who wants to be a millionaire?
You may recognise the system as the one used in the TV programme, 'Who wants to be a millionaire?' where the audience registers their answers to a question to hel pthe contestant decide on their own answer. Some people refer to the electronic voting system as a 'personal response system' (PRS) or call the handsets 'clickers'.
School of Biological Sciences use of electronic voting
The School of Biological Sciences has bought 100 handsets and one receiver for the Biological Science first year undergraduate students to use during the academic year 2007/8. Medical stream students (MB, MG, MP) will also be given handsets from the CETL stores. A further 100 handsets and 2 receivers are available from the CETL GENIE. Over the 2007/8 year, 15 handsets were lost by first year undergraduates.
2008/9 an additional 30 handsets were purchased to replace those lost. 199 handsets in total were distributed to first year students in the first week of term.
The handsets are small and use radio-frequency transmitters.
Interactive voting slides can be incorporated into PowerPoint, votes are collected and the result displaid on screen.
