Near-Surface Geoscience 2011 at Leicester

Ian Hill

I am a geophysicist and a Chartered Geologist, having trained with a Geology BSc and then taken an MSc in Applied Geophysics. My research project for my PhD was using marine geophysics to determine the plate tectonic evolution of the Scotia Sea, Antarctica.

Research

Since then I have been involved in a number of marine geophysical projects, and as a geophysical scientist and co-chief scientist with the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP).
More recently my interests have evolved towards near-surface geophysics, and the application of new technology to the acquisition of near-surface geophysical data. Using GPS position fixing, and real-time computer logging and data processing, geophysical surveys can be made more precise, as well as more efficient and cheaper. This makes them more useable for a range of applications including mineral exploration, environmental monitoring, hydrogeology, and archaeology. (It also draws on experience gained from the navigation and data logging used in marine surveys!)

Geophysical Exploration Equipment Platform (GEEP)

The near-surface geophysics above has led to the development of the GEEP system, which is now in commercial production and can be bought or rented from Geomatrix Earth Science ltd.

Teaching

I am Course Director for the Geophysics undergraduate courses, and teach topics in plate tectonics, environmental geoscience, and several aspects of geophysics, such as reflection seismology.

LGAS

I am Treasurer of the departmental Alumni Society LGAS which has over 400 members distributed around the world. As well as a great networking group, our alumni also support the department by funding student fieldwork, providing student prizes, and offering career advice for current students.

Other Interests

When I’m not in the department I am often out at Rutland Water, where I have my own sailing dinghy, and also help to coordinate the safety-boat facilities for the reservoir (largest man-made lake in Europe). I am an RYA qualified Safety Boat driver, sailing instructor, First Aid instructor, and hold the International Certificate (ICC) for offshore sailing.
