Research Interests
I am interested in all aspects of the lifecycle of learning technology development, including analysis, design and evaluation. More specific research interests include:
- Mobile learning: considering mobility as a property of the technology that is used to mediate learning, but also as inherent in the learner's lifestyle, the research focus is on understanding and supporting the learning of people on the move, from one context to another, switching locations, social groups, technologies, and learning topics.
- Evaluation of mobile and informal learning: The evaluation of mobile and informal learning is faced with several challenges, including how to identify and isolate distinct learning experiences for inspection; and how to deal with the inherent inconsistency of the learning practice in mobile and informal contexts in terms of activity structure and learning outcomes. These complexities can have a significant effect on traditional types of evaluation that involve pre-post activity performance tests, and call for a need to re-interpret the notion of learning outcomes by shifting the focus of learning evaluation from the assessment of performance to understanding the interplay between learning context and learning practice.
- Technology-enhanced (lifelong) learning: "Learning is a cumulative process involving connections and reinforcement among the variety of learning experiences people encounter in their lives: at home, during schooling, and out in the community and workplace" (Dierking et al. 2003). What tools are necessary/desirable for lifelong learners?
- Technology-enhanced museum visitor experience: how best to support aspects of the visiting experience such as meaning making (interpretation), collaboration in the museum, connection of the museum with other learning contexts, and integration of the visiting experience with the visitor's personal framework.
